The Evolution of Microdermabrasion
Tuesday, February 8, 2022
If you have been in the Beauty Therapy and Cosmetic Industry for some time, you’d be aware that one of the most common treatments of all time is Microdermabrasion. This treatment is also generally an integral part of many aesthetic therapy courses available in Australia.
How did microdermabrasion start?
Since the early 1900s, several manuals and motorized devices have been used to remove the top layer of the skin. These treatments were harsh and involved considerable risks. That changed in 1985, when Dr Mattioli and Dr Brutto developed, in Italy, the first microdermabrasion. A safe and non-invasive closed-loop system. Within a few years, the technology spread throughout the world, including to Europe and the US.
How did it evolve?
In the late 1990s, Microdermabrasion started getting considerable attention in Australia. This is when Clairderm Medical Aesthetics, Australasian Medical Aesthetics at the time, took on the project of developing a world-class top-performing microdermabrasion system, and started manufacturing and supplying the local market the now-iconic: Clairderm Classic. Over the years, our engineers and technicians designed several different versions and models, adding new features, and improving the performance and usability of this system. Today, Clairderm locally manufactures 4 different models of microdermabrasion machines, performing up to 3 different modalities: Crystal, Diamond, and most recently Hydrabrasion (water microdermabrasion).
The current market
Microdermabrasion is not a new technology, but Does that mean that the hype is gone and the treatment is no longer in demand? Not at all! Over the past few decades, microdermabrasion treatments have gained considerable traction worldwide, and unlike many other technologies that promised to “disrupt” the market or seemed to take over the Beauty Industry, only to fade in a few years, the microdermabrasion market has been going steadily strong for 35+ years! The reason is simple, the treatment is cost-effective, safe, and doesn't involve any downtime. Very few other technologies have all these factors combined. Therefore, so many aesthetic clinics offer microdermabrasion treatments to their clients. It is also why many beauty therapies and dermal science courses include microdermabrasion in their curriculum. So, here’s our verdict: Microdermabrasion is still as popular as ever and is not going anywhere anytime soon!
Pro Tip: Do you already offer microdermabrasion but feel that your clients want something new? Or you simply would like to take your micro results a step up? It may be a good idea to consider the latest modality of Hydrabrasion. Hydrabrasion is wet microdermabrasion. The treatment is less abrasive but does a much better cleanse of the upper layers of the skin. It’s an ideal add-on to the crystal or diamond treatment and can be performed in one session. The combination will amplify results!
